DRAM Fire & Security can supply fire extinguishers in London and many of the surrounding areas. Fire extinguishers have save hundreds of lives each year. All businesses and offices should have multiple fire extinguishers to cover the different types of fire you may encounter, as well as proper training for individuals within the company in order to use them properly. Unfortunately, there is an amount of confusion over the different types of fire extinguishers and the different classes. People in general don’t understand what each class means, and how to use them. Don’t worry though, we can help educate you and your employees on all you need to know to keep yourselves safe via one of our fire training courses.
There are five different classes to consider. The class of a fire extinguisher tells us the type of fire that it is designed to be used on. Fire extinguishers are classified as class A, B, C, D, and F.
Class A fire extinguishers are used to put out small fires on items such as paper, wood, cloth and other textiles.
Class B fire extinguishers are used for burning liquids such as petrol, cooking oil, kerosene and diesel fuel.
Class C extinguishers are for flammable gases such as Propane, Butane, Calor Gas and Methane.
Class D fire extinguishers are used to put out fires for combustible metals such as magnesium, potassium, powdered aluminium, sodium, sodium-potassium alloy uranium, and lithium.
Finally, extinguishers which are rated under class F are used to put out fires that have been caused from cooking oils and are most often found in restaurants and chip shops or anywhere that uses commercial deep fat fryers.
Types of fire extinguishers are determined by the different extinguishing agents any given fire extinguisher contains. The type ABC Dry Powder fire extinguishers are considered a multipurpose fire extinguisher and are very common. These extinguishers will work on class A, B, and C fires. BC Dry Powder extinguishers obviously work on extinguishing class B and C fires, and carbon dioxide fire extinguishers work on class B fires and are commonly found near electrical risks.
Two other common types of fire extinguishers in London are water extinguishers and foam extinguishers. The water extinguisher works on class A fires, while the foam extinguishers work on both class A and B fires. If you need an extinguisher that can be used around sensitive electrical equipment, then you will need a Carbon Dioxide (Co2) extinguisher.
